Although Nepal is among the richest in terms of water resource availability, there are still challenges to irrigate the farmland in most of the part of the country.
Some of the key challenges that categorize irrigation development in Nepal are old infrastructure and poor performances of the existing irrigation systems; poor system efficiency and under–utilization of canal water; weak participation of Water Users Associations (WUAs) and weak institutional capacity.
Additionally, due to riparian issues, in Nepal, it has not been possible to tap the major river systems for irrigation development, which discharge substantial amount of water even during the dry season.
Gundi is a small village in the cliff of The Mahabharata Range in Chitwan district. The village demography is predominant of Chepangs (93.1%) followed by Newars (6.9%). The project is aimed to irrigate 10.09 hectares of farmland so that the villagers could have at least three harvest in a year, instead of two harvest at the current scenario. When the agricultural production would increase this would make a positive impact in the life of marginalized people in such a semi nomad community.
The project was supposed to complete in eight months. But due to the ecological disruption, the previously identified water source dried up and the partner had to find out another source which caused delay in the project. As soon as the new water source was identified and project activities advanced already, it is expected that the activities will be completed within February 2019.
