Vocational skills are beneficial for any individual. They play an important role in the long-term as they help industries, which in turn stimulates the economic development of the country. Vocational education is also important because it has a positive effect on business and attracts foreign investment.
Vocational education is an alternative education and training given to students who choose to gain work specific skills in various professions. These professions can range from craftsmanship to technicians to engineers, and it is vocational education that provides the know-how and expertise. Vocational education has always existed in the traditional crafts and cottage industries, and is slowly diversifying into developing careers in retail, tourism and information technology to name a few.
As Nepal’s supplies many unskilled or semiskilled labour in the domestic labour market as well as abroad (mainly Gulf countries and Malaysia), the vocational education is quite instrumental to increase the income of the labor.
Unica Foundation earlier carried out various training for solar technicians in the past. In 2019 Unica Foundation started a plumbing training programme in Pokhara in cooperation with the Panchakanya Training Institute (PTI).
Now the purposed training of Arc Welding (level 2 standard) starts, with a 390 hours duration as per the curricula approved by Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT).
18 participants from needy and underprivileged families will be selected to take part in this training. However the training is expected to start from October 2020, the pandemic of Covid-19 might cause some delay to commence.
